ADVOCACY
I. TITLE:
Gender Equality is Humanity
II. BACKGROUND:
People of all genders should have equal chances, rights, and responsibilities. Gender inequality has an impact on everyone, including men, women, transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, kids, and families. People of all ages and ethnicities are affected. Gender equality is desperately needed.
Far too many girls, especially those from the poorest families, still face gender discrimination in education, child marriage and pregnancy, sexual violence and unrecognized domestic work. These are some types of gender inequality.
III. AIM:
End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere. Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation. Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate.
Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.
IV. OBJECTIVE(S):
In addition to being a fundamental human right, gender equality is also a precondition for a world that is stable, affluent, and sustainable. Although there has been progress in recent decades, gender equality will not be achieved by the year 2030 as planned.
The COVID-19 pandemic’s social and economic effects have made the situation much worse. Many aspects of development are lagging behind, such as the amount of time spent on unpaid caregiving and domestic work, decisions regarding sexual and reproductive health, and gender-responsive budgeting. Services for women’s health, which were already underfunded, have been severely disrupted. Women continue to experience a lot of violence. And even though women took the lead in reacting to COVID-19, they still lag behind males in obtaining the positions of power that are rightfully theirs.
To hasten change, commitment and audacious action are required, including by promoting legislation, regulations, spending plans, and organizations that encourage gender equality. Given that less than half of the data needed to monitor Goal 5 are currently available, more funding should be put towards gender statistics.
V. TARGET(S):
Gender inequality affects everyone, including men. Stereotypes or ‘rules’ about how women and men, girls and boys should be begin in childhood and follow us through to adulthood. Not everyone experiences inequality the same way.
VI. PARTNER(S):
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) is the UN agency dedicated to gender equality. The agency was established to accelerate progress on meeting women’s needs across the world.
